Creative Business Resources

December 20, 2019

I am incredibly passionate about artists being paid what they’re worth and eliminating the “starving artist” stereotype. That being said, I love talking with other designers, muralists, and other creatives about business. It’s important to have a community you can go to with questions about everything from pricing a project to feedback on a design to recommendations for accountants.

After almost 3 years in business, I’ve compiled a handy list of my favorite resources below.

  • Profit First — This book by Mike Michaelowicz is a great tool to get your bank account in order and learning how to organize your money. If you’re not making a profit and paying yourself appropriately, you need to, and this is a great way to start! P.S. check your local library if you want to save some money and read it first before buying!

  • Freelance, and Business, and Stuff — This handy guide from the design studio Hoodzpah is a gem of information. You can buy the paperback or the ebook and start implementing some of their best practices for getting clients, setting rates, and all the other things that come with running a business.

  • Creative Works Conference — I can’t say enough about this conference. I’ve attended the past two years, and each year was a fresh wave of knowledge, shared personal experiences, business tidbits, and engaging conversation. It’s inspired me and gotten me back on track to designing cool stuff again.

  • Branding with Bre — Use code “whitecoffee” for $25 off! For those of you who love designing identities, Rowan Made’s branding course is for you. She provides you with a step-by-step guide outlining her process along with many helpful resources and templates for you to use. I’ve adopted her one concept method, and so far it’s been working out really well, given that you do so much brand discovery first to fully understand the client’s needs and audience. Great resource!

  • Full Time You — Are you still unsure what your niche is or what direction you see your career moving? Check out this workbook and video series by Meg Lewis. It helped me so much and was really fun!

Do you have any resources you’d add to the list? Email me your suggestions or message me on Instagram. I’d love to hear them!
